I also used solid lifters that were new, not some that came out of an old
engine and were grooved on the surface. I kept my old hydraulic lifters
around just in case. I never needed them again.
I think my problem started because I was using the wrong oil filter and
could not build up adequate oil pressure with a light oil. I used heavier
oil that just was not meant for use with hydraulic lifters. Hydraulic
lifters gum up really easy.

It has been a long time since I put in the regular lifters in place of the
hydraulic lifters. My lifters were the ones that were in the 1.7, if I
remember. I don't remember any holes in these. The theory, I think, of the
hydraulic lifters was that the valves did not need adjusting after the
initial adjustment. I drove with the regular lifters for 2 years with no
extra adjustments. The hydraulics seemed to clog and stick.

I thought the hole for the hydraulic tappets was bigger than that for the
regular ones (please correct me if I am wrong). If it isn't then this looks
like a sensible solution.
