It isn't because of mail size, but more because of my work files, I am aware that one can eventually fill up a 3.2 gig drive. Gads!

I use Outlook 97 (a full blown version). I like the fact that the mail files (and all other entries like calendar appointments, etc) are full text searchable and sortable by sender, date, appointment, project, or other category. This comes at a price, as you said, size.

My solution is two fold. I have begun storing client projects on Zip disks, and pulling old project files to Zip disks. Also, I plan on sticking another drive in the open bay of my box. You can get a 3.2 for about $125, and that buys me a LOT of room for a little money.
