Subject: Check rebuilt AFMs
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII"

I had a customer that is kinda typical to what I normally run into call me last week to say thanks. He had been having a problem with his '84 Vanagon running terrible and had been buying all of the parts from another list vendor to try to solve the problem. He replaced Oxygen sensor, AFM, temp sender, coil, etc. with no luck. After throwing all these parts at the problem he calls me (I only wish they would call me first :). Since everything else seemed to be good he suspected the ECU. I rented him a known good one that I had for checking purposes, and he installed it and found it was not the problem. I told him to check all of the readings at the ECU plug with a multimeter. Immediately he found his problem. The rebuilt AFM that he had just purchased was out of limits. The vendor was nice enough to send him another unit and he checked it before installing it. It was reading properly and after he installed it, his problems were solved.

The point here is, don't take it for granted that a rebuilt, or new part is good. Always check it to make sure that it is within limits because it could be defective. And please call me first so I can save you $400 or $500 worth of throwing money at a problem :)
