Carfax.com is only good for manufacturer "lemon" buybacks, salvage titles, and stolen vehicles. If you want to know who the POs were you have to check with the state that issued the title.

My '84 Westy that I purchased in '86 was actually a VOA lemon buy back, information the dealer had to tell me when I asked him where he got the car. Carfax does not show this fact on my VIN, so I wonder how far back they actually go or how accurate they really are.

BTW, turns out it was a grossly misadjusted throttle switch (from the factory, the paint mark was unbroken) that caused the vehicle to buck and stumble at a constant speed. Must have driven the PO crazy for 30,000 miles, it took two years for VW to buy it back! I bought the Bentley when I got the car and found it in less than ten minutes. Makes you wonder about those dealership mechanics.
