My experience with the tdi- 100,000 plus; and ny conversation with others have
led me to recommend following VW's guidelines on oil changes for the first few
changes at least. According to several dealers I've spoke to, the TDI is
delivered with break-in oil to allow the rings to seat. Change your oil at 1000
or 3000 and you may end up with an oil burner for life- as some have. I've
followed the recommendations for my 96 Passat TDI and now with my new Beetle
TDI, and I can say they use nary a drop of oil. After a several changes I
reverted to 1 /2 the recommended mileage- 3750 for my dino oil Passat, (I had
about 90K on the Passat before they started recommending synthetic- so I stayed
with the dino) and 5000 after break-in in- for my synthetic Beetle. Just my 2
