Some cars come from the factory with normal off the shelf synthetics. Some don't.

So far nobody has determined what the VW oil is that comes from the factory, but VW does have 'special' oils registered with the API, and this is what most people are thinking are the break in oils. That and VW also keeps beating it into the dealers to keep the customers from changing the oil too soon for the first oil change. After that they allow the dealer to counsel the owner and let him change the oil when he wants...

Since they keep beating on the dealers to place such a high priority on keeping that first oil in their, it strongly hints that they are using a break in oil. Since VW has raised the power train warrenty to a long period of time, they have an interest in keeping things in good repair, so if it wasn't a good idea to keep the oil in, then they would recommend changing it sooner.

It all depends on what metals you use in the rings. Some types of rings require break in oils, some don't. Only VW will know that, or you could ask the OEM part supplier.
