Jason--

FWIW I concur with the others who have responded in favor of the Westy. I mean you have the Westy and I can't remember what the other car is--seems to me it was a German make?

OK. Seriously. I seem to think you're the guy who's in New York with a stalker in Montana who warned us of your arrival. I don't know where you are in New York but there is some great camping here. And the truth is you can go anywhere else and camp as well with the Westy. There's nothing as great as a road trip with a sink and a bed. It makes going anywhere pretty easy. I've headed to Colorado and Wyoming every summer since I bought my bus.

My westy is a water boxer, and the "real" heat is nice here in the winter. But there are ways to get heat in the air cooled as well they tell me. I'm not sure of other advanges vs. disadvantages but I'm sure maintainance on the air-cooled is cheaper.

Now it depends on what you need. That GL is a great people mover, so if you have a large family or a bunch of friends that could be the way to go. But he Westy is a home. I get through many a frustrating day thinking "F#@$ it. I'm gonna get out of this city and move into my Campmobile and see the world" That to me is invaluable. An escape route if you will. Truth is I problaby never do it full time. But it's pretty to think so.

And I think you're doing the right thing. Having too many vehicles can make them all suffer from the lack of the attention they need. A few years back I had to sell my 1958 Olds Super 88 white over black two-door hardtop with 60K miles on it. ( I bought it with 30K miles) I hated to do it, in fact don't tell my old frat buddies but I cried like a baby the day that car drove away. But there are only so many hours in a day and it was falling into disrepair. So I understand at least a bit of your problem and your dilemma.

Having said that if you don't plan to camp much the Vanagon GL might be a bit more practical. I can't think of a reason to carry around the camping equipt. if you don't need it. I mean you do lose some passenger room-- BUT YOU'VE GOT A SINK! Sorry. I kind of like the Westy.

Besides, your buddy in Montana has his heart set on seeing the Westy as I remember.

Oh, and I don't really have any frat buddies.

Good Luck Jeff 83.5 Westy NYC
