Find a tach from a diesel Golf or Jetta II, and the tach housing from a later Vanagon gasser. (I did this in my Syncro TD when I converted it) Mate the two, and it will fit into the space formerly occupied by the clock. The signal wire for the tach comes from the 'W' terminal of the alternator. You will also need a positive and negative to the tach. > 2) Get I get the above to fit in the space now occupied by the clock? > Maybe even with cut-outs for the fuel and temp gauges? The Golf /Jetta tach will have a single opening at the bottom of the face, so: You may need to use the bottom half of the gasser Vanagon tach face, and the top half of the Golf / Jetta tach face, mating them together at the screws that attach the face to the tach unit. One other alternative I have heard, but not tried, is to use the gasser Vanagon tach, and there is some sort of signal changer available that will change the alternator wave signal to a 'square' signal as the gasser tach needs.
