This scenario is quite plausible. While the O2 sensor is plugged
in the ECU is running in "closed loop". Obviously it is in "open loop"
when unplugged. Each type of fuel management is governed by different
guidelines. Closed loop strives for fuel economy while open loop is more
a "limp home" mode and fuel economy is not a priority.
My first guess as to the malfunction is the TEMPII sensor is out
of tolerance at operating temperature. After that the AFM of throttle
body or its adjustment.
Keep us informed as to what you find.
