VW recommend 12,000 kms oil changes, so 8000 mile oil changes, and that
was BACK THEN when they recommend mineral based CC oils! ( early 80's
for my rabbit diesel )

Since oil technology has radically increased since then, and diesels now
run on low sulfur fuels which now means soot is reduce to less then half
of what it used to be, yes I think we moved past the days of 3000 mile /
3 month oil changes. Even back then VW made an engine that could do
better then that. Combine even this older engine with newer oil
technology and you can do better then what VW recommended back then.
Keep in mind those numbers are maximums, people who drive ONLY city
would use a lower drain time.

You'll find that looking at your manual for VW's gas engines you'll see
similar long drain times for engines from that era.
