For my '81 (last year of rubber mats) I have a piece of carpet for the passenger area and a piece for the aisle. I leave the front footwells with the rubber. The carpet goes on top of the rubber mats.

Every few years I buy a scrap of tan carpet and cut the large rectangle and the narrow, tapered rectangle (with cutouts for the shift and the parking brake). Then I sometimes just leave the edges, but lately (wanting a classier look) have had the edges bound. Carpet cost is usually ~$45. The binding about the same.

When I have carpet cleaned at home or in one of my rentals, I pull these out and have the cleaner do them too. He makes them look like new!
