Subject: Cold engine "ticking", clutch rumble - Help
Content-Type: multipart/alternative;

Hello

My 81 Westy has a few problems and I need to know how much to fix;...

1)Clutch rumbles and gear shifting is a little "sticky", sometimes grinds when selecting reverse (I put it in reverse when engine off to get around this). Spoke to mechanic and it sounds like a new clutch is needed. Haven't checked clutch fluid but brakes are a bit spongy also I better get that fixed as well. Mechanic said about $C500 to put in new clutch. Mechanic said fix it before it wrecks expensive gearbox. He hasn't seen the van yet, any other possibilities?...

2) While the engine is out what else should I do? I did a compression test after barely warming it up (drove about 1km), pulled out all the plugs and didn't touch the throttle. Got only about 102 on front two cylinders and about 130 on back two cylinders. Have only done 600 miles (half town half highway) since I bought it and it has used around a pint of oil. It has a "tick tick tick" when cold which goes once warmed up in a few minutes. Engine has done 118,000 miles and I have found no receipts for previous motor or clutch work. Engine oil is 10w-40 and has some additive in it. I think it may have had a stuck valve recently. Despite all these symptoms it seems to go well!. What else should I get done and what are the approximate costs? Is running the engine as it is until it blows up a false economy?...

3)Thought I might put some synthetic oil in gearbox and replace the shifter bushings to make shifting a less exacting task (thanks to the threads on the list suggesting this)...

4) Any other suggestions greatly appreciated. I have tried searching for similar threads but often my computor gets overwelmed by all the info and brings up nothing.

Thanks Murray C
