Here's another option I came across as well, make your own sender for the tach:

I personally have been exploring the idea of using a tach from an A2 Jetta TD. It's been sitting on my desk for a week now, I just haven't had time to take apart the van and see what I need to do it. Maybe I'll see if I can find a spare cluster from another vanagon to play with. My van is the only thing I have to drive right now, so taking it out of commision for a day or two is not an option.
