Here's another thought. Is it possible the mechanic said "camshaft followers" meaning lifters? That would make sense if the lifted (assuming hydraulic) are weakening...

Hmmm, anyone on the list every heard a noisy cam shaft bearing? No VW mechanic would tear down a waterboxer just to replace "noisy cam bearings" (Yikes!). I think you need to find another mechanic, but let's see what the other list members say.
