A HUGE thanks to everyone who responded. I was overwhelmed! Of all the varying opinions, seems the general consensus is to definitely get it inspected before buying, and to offer $3500 - $400, depending on the results.

Probably the most common point of contention was air-cooler vs. water-cooled. Lots of people said to get it 'cause to I'll have less problems since it's air-cooled (albeit, it'll be lacking in heat) - and lots of other people said to wait and get a later model Westie that's water-cooled. Sounds like water-cooled parts are more expensive, but the van runs better, has more heat, and "needs less TLC"?

Someone else said you can't run air-cooled vans in over 90 degrees weather without risking serious damage - is this true? Many people also wondered why I'd want an automatic. To tell you the truth, I don't and I'd MUCH rather have a manual. But, that's what's on this thing, and I'm thinking it may be worth it since it's in such good shape. (This transmission does have 1st and 2nd gear, in addition to Drive.)

Another person said to stay away since it's on it's second engine with only 47K on it, and that auto-trans and air-cooled are not a good combo.

Here's what I'm gonna do: I'm supposed to meet him today over his lunch hour to get the title which I need for the financing/loan. I will offer him $3500, contingent on the results of the inspection. Unfortunately, he wants to be the one tobring the van to the repair place (I chose it - it's called Courtesy Auto Service - they're here in Madison and they "specialize in VW repair and modification") and he can't do it until Monday. I think I will go as high as $4000, if the inspection comes out clean.

I now have a huge list of things to check for. THANKS again to everyone who wrote - I can't tell you how much I appreciate the "reality check".

JJ
