I think the 86 2.1 has an oil cooler (this may be optional) at the
filter location. If it does, they can loosen a bit and leak. Just
tighten it up and see if that fixes it, although it may be adviseable
to remove the filter and cooler to clean up & reoil the sealing
surfaces.


FWIW-

Another leak point that <italic>looks</italic> like the oil filter
leaking is the distributor seal. It's an o-ring that blocks oil from
pushing out past the distributor shaft. That's real easy to fix. When I
replaced mine, I <underline>chipped</underline> it off (I guess it had
crystalized from age and oil exposure) and put the new one on.

Another common leak point is the oil breather tower. It has an o-ring
as well that ages and starts to leak. After I replaced both of these
o-rings, Vinnie is dry as a bone now. No leaks here. TBD has the seal.
It's not a regular o-ring though, in cross section it's sorta ellipse
in shape not regular old round.
