Right you are! I should have checked my manual before replying.

It's interesting that VW is instructing dealers to use the synthetic oil for the free maintenance oil changes, instead of the presumably cheaper dino oil. See http://tech.vw.com/pdf/V99-05TDIsyn_.PDF (you need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view this.)
