These cupholders may not be cheap, but they are well worth the price! These are the best cupholders I have ever had.

I just received my new cupholders that I ordered from Griots Garage, www.griotsgarage.com , They are really cool. Just opening and closing them is fun. German engineering all the way. Their website says these are used in the MB 500SL. there is a stamp on them that reads "fischer CBOX". They feel very sturdy. When folded, measures 4 3/4" length x 4" width x 1 1/2" height. Will hold a 12 oz can up to 1 liter bottle. You can install them with double sided adhesive tape or with the include mounting hardware (looks like black sheet metal screws, very permanent) Very clear instructions are included. There aren't cheap, $40 for 2 including shipping. IMO they are the last cupholders I will have to buy and I have been through a few.
