I use one of those cheap "egg carton" foam mattress toppers cut to fit,
and it really helps.  To make it last you need to make a cover for it
from a sheet.  When traveling you can fold it over in the back and stack
stuff on it, or you can put it on top of the upper bed when folded by
doubling up part of it in the gap behind the shorter folded part of the
bed.   The top will close perfectly.

Takes up more space than an air mattress but is easier to use and more
comfortable.
