<<Vinnie, our 85 1.9L Westy GL, has 242,000 miles. Not the most, but more than most.> And now for the "more info" part. Remember, <underline>you</underline> <underline>asked</underline>.
FWIW-I was working as a product training specialist and traveled about 15K a year on the company dime at 30¢/mile or we would never have been able to afford Vinnie. We don't have a house or kids-Yet.
9/96 161K-Purchased,Adopted, whatever. 12/96 170K miles-Noticed a coolant leak upon startup when it was extremely cold (10ºF or less). It would leak about a 1/2 pint then stop. During moderate temps it was a <underline>really</underline> slow drip leak. Kept a close eye on the coolant. We ran the engine like that for 1.5 years until the coolant was a slow gradual leak at all temps.
Prior to the rebuild: 12/96 168K-New factory exaust (heads to cat) and throttle body boot 12/96 168K-New throttle switch O2 sensor, coolant flush & fill 3/97 172K-New coolant tank sensor switch 8/97 183K-Replaced the 4 main coolant lines in engine compartment 12/97 191K-New rear heater core
New engine: 4/98 199,254 miles-Vinnie now has a rebuilt VW Canada motor (Has it been two years!?)
After the rebuild: 5/98 200K-Replaced radiator and two front hoses 11/98 215K-New fuel pressure regulator, ignition module, fuel lines in engine compartment 12/98 217K-Replace ECU with used from list member 1/99 217K-New temp II sensor 3/99 220K-Replaced throttle body with used unit, new Bosch AFM 6/99 225K-New HT wires, Bosch plat 4's 1/00 240K-New water pump, new metal coolant line that runs from right head to pump (behind pulley), new thermostat, coolant recovery tank, new coolant level sender, small cooling hoses that were removed for the H2O pump, oil breather o-ring, distributor o-ring & really flushed out the system and added fresh Autobhan coolant.
Vinnie runs real well/real reliably now. I guess he should. Not mentioning the trans work. That's another thread entirely. He now has other goodies as well, like the SA grill, H4 headlamps w/ beefy wiring harness and 130watt high beams, and '87 power mirrors (separate post for that too). Oh yea, we didn't find The List until Sept 98. And what a God send. Prior to that, almost all "work" was done at the F*€#$ing dealer. Don't get me started on that.
Hope that's enough info. Later,
