Mark, Ask your neighbors for the contact info on the carpet installers. They are usually sub contractors. Call them up and ask them if you could stop by a future job and get them to do this for a couple bucks while you watch and ask a few polite questions. Heck, they may even have a whole piece from a new job that you'd like better. They will no doubt have all the materials and lots more know how. I know I don't do that kind of thing often.
