I had this problem when I first got my 91 Multivan. Once I did get it open a shot of lubricant to the mechanism made it work nicely. The problem seems to be that there is a catch that is supposed to recess itself when you push which does not recess. Figuring out which side the catch is on, I believe the drivers side and forcing the table the other way about a quarter of an inch was the only way I was able to get it open.
