Rare earth magnets work very well, indeed. I found a very good source of them for free - defunct hard drives! Some of the magnets found therein are attatched to nice little steel plates with holes in them for your convenience, and if you are really lucky, there will be a matching steel plate for the other side.

These magnets are also currently holding a plastic sheet over my Golf's leaky sunroof (will clean drain tubes someday).

Collect as many as you can, and if you don't have the right tools to disassemble the drive, break the casting as need be. What, afraid of data loss ? ;->
