Sean,

Loosen the small case bolts above and below the pump and pry gently and evenly with two screwdrivers, one on each side. You can break the ears off, so if it is really tight go to your favorite VW FLAPS and get a VW oil pump puller (same as for air cooled engines), should be under $20, and use it. Be sure to get four new sealing nuts while you are there, don't reuse the old ones, and don't forget to tighten up the case bolts!
