Ahh! One problem with this theory that I have found: the pressure inside the van will force the canvas to "bellows" out, and thereby have a greater tendency to get stuck in the hinges or under the seal.

I always open a sliding window and just use the top of my head to lower the top while I tuck in the canvas...

Yes there is a way to do this.. Get inside, close all the windows and doors and then realease the top. The pressure will let the top drift down rather than fall down. This will allow one to tuck the canvas and not have to hold up the top at the same time! And remember to watch out for the skylight if your van is equiped with one. Later,
