Chris - you raised the pivotal issue - IT MUST BE AN AIR-COOLED VANAGON. In a wasserboxer, the tire would block the radiator.

i have. you can use the front spare mount from a '70's bus or other type of front spare mount. w/ the aircooled vanagon it's ok to do this because obviously there's no radiator for the tire to interfere w/ cooling.
