Here's a stab at what he is talking about. Thermistors are tiny bits of semiconductors with highly temperature sensitive electrical resistance. Kinda like a temperature sensor.

Your answering machine at home has one to tell it to answer a call after getting so many rings. Also in those electronic thermometers you use when you have a fever. And probably in our Vanagon's temp sensors, Right?
