I always thought people did this on the old vans mostly to move the
weight of the spare to the front.  That, of course, is not an issue
with most Vanagons--maybe it's just the security of always knowing
your spare is there.  Seems to me front mounting encourages vandalism.

Please note - During the past 17 years of operation, several gigabytes of Vanagon mail messages have been archived. Searching the entire collection will take up to five minutes to complete. Please be patient!
