And the Vanagon isn't the first VW with the spare in this place! First, the 411. The spare is on the bottom of the luggage compartment. Second, the Superbeetle. The spare pushes on the frame in an impact. It would then be natural for VW to let the Vanagon have the spare there too. Too bad My Syncro doesn't have the spare there :-(
