AFAIK carpet splicing is usually done with a special tape that looks a lot like duct tape but is red (at least the ones I've seen are). You have to make two perfectly even cuts, then stick the tape against the back side of one of the seams. Then carefully lay the second piece up against the first, sticking it down onto the tape. The trickiest thing is getting the edges to butt up against each other well without any gaps.

I've done this with berber and industrial (low pile) carpeting, but never with a medium or shag pile carpet. It is pretty easy. You do need a SHARP carpet knife, a long T-square, and a large cutting surface.
