Actually, yours is wrong. For the 1988 model year, VW redesigned the heater housing in the dash, to allow hot air to come out of the ducts on the outer sides of the dash. I plan on replacing the housing this coming summer, so I'll have a fresh motor before it quits, and get nice warm air for the winter. All 1980-87 have only cold air outlets, not great when it comes to defrosting windows.
