Hello, Bob and welcome back. I was wondering how your conversion was
holding up when I saw the post from you forwarded to the list. Your web
page from 2 years ago inspired me to do a similar conversion to my 82
Westy. I put a new 1994 Jetta 1.9TD motor into it and have been driving
it for a few months. I changed the tranny to a DK(air-cooled, 4.57 rp)
and I am running 215/75/15 tires. It pulls these tall gears just fine
and gets about 25 MPG if I keep it under 70. I took it to Southern
Mexico and just returned after 5000 miles, never even opening the engine
cover. I used 1 quart per 2000 miles, acceptable but I hope for even
better with more break in. What are you using for oil? My next big
project may be converting my 82 to a Syncro drive train. The one gearing
improvement I think I could use is the Syncro granny gear as now first
is a little tall when starting on a steep hill. I may just put a Syncro
tranny in but I hope to put the Syncro front suspension in also.
