I also had my heat exchangers replaced by VW. The replacements were not the original aluminized type but are painted steel. They do not seem to kick out as much heat. The insides were evidently coated with a sinter or powder coat. After two years flakes of this coating still fly out of the defrosters and heat ducts. I have some old aluminied exchangers which I am saving for the day these replacements rust out.
