I believe that's good advice, but I don't think it's critical -- the plastic tee fittings (or the flow restrictor in the ones with metal tee fittings) limit flow. The missing core of course adds some resistance, but I don't think it's a lot compared to the rest. And if the flow rate doesn't go up significantly there should be no problem -- hot coolant doesn't lose much heat there unless the blower is on.
