What's left afterward is just what you describe. They *meant* them to be impossible to remove -- but with a clean, sharp-edged visegrips you can grab the extreme bottom (maybe by going in vertically, i.e. gripping off the end of the jaws instead of the size) and start them out. Most of the time, anyway.
