Jonathan,
Start with the easiest.  How old is the battery and how long was it
sitting before you couldn't stand it and had to drive it?   It sounds
like it could just be time for a new battery.  Weird things happen when
batteries get low.  I charge my 914's every couple of weeks if I don't
drive it.
