Subject: '80 exhaust (California vs. Standard)
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

With the nicer weather I started taking care of some of the maintenance requirements on my '80 vanagon. I pulled the exhaust system to examine/fix a small hole in the crossover pipe and noticed that the whole exhaust system is about shot. I am in need of advice.

The van has the California emissions package (i.e. everything is harder to find/more expensive) Is it possible to put a standard exhaust on my van?

I know the standard exhaust didn't have a place for the O2 sensor and had an EGR filter('80 California models didn't). Is there any other problems that I'm not considering?

After searching the Bus Depot site there were several economical alternatives for the standard exhaust and very few parts available for the California models.

Any '80 vanagon with California emission owners have a suggestion. I think I could salvage the heat exchangers and the cat but the rest of the system is junk.

One more thing, were I live there are no emission inspections to pass.

Thanks,

Gary
