I used to have an Alfa Romeo Guiletta Sprint Veloce - with dual Webers - Man! was it quick - with a similar glowing exhaust manifold. It turns out that the timing had worked itself off. (never admit that I could have set it in the wrong spot) So with the timing slightly retarded, in my case, the exhaust manifold was glowing red down to the muffler pipe. It sure made a pretty resonnating sound. I reset the timing an the performance improved (Duh!) and the glow cooled down to whatever normal was for that car.

Ok back to Vanagons! The moral of my story is to look and check at the timing setting first to make sure that it is right-on. I would be cautious of destroying any cat converter.

My 2cents,

Joel 89 Syncro Westy Soon to have new OME shocks No Rust-yet, in Rochester NY where Spring is springing.
