Subject: heater blower fan

The heater blower on my 87 Vanagon works erratically. I've tried replacing the switch but that doesn't help and I suspect the problem is farther along, maybe with a loose connection at the fan, itself (banging the door often makes it come on). My question to all you experienced van fixers is whether or not I should tackle disassembling the dashboard to get at the fan. Is this a straightforward task for someone who is a reasonably good do-it yourselfer or should I let the VW dealer have the job? Thanks for any advice, Nelson Hogg
