No. The plastic one is indeed stock on your van. Some Vanagons (in fact, most thru '85) have this plastic square filter instead of (or in rare cases in addition to) the big metal one. Part number 133 133 511, about $5 on my website. Order this and you can replace your existing filter in about 5 minutes. Be sure to pinch off the fuel line before removing the old filter, since it is gravity-fed and otherwise you will get a faceful of gasoline.
