Should I check the heater valve before just replacing the cable? >>

I am in the same boat with my cable on my '82. You can check the operation of the valve by disconnecting it from the cable and moving it w/ your fingers. Should move very easily. My wire was crimpoed and I attempted to straighten it. Worked for a day or so and then it crimped again. My experience with them is that once they are crimped, you will continue to have the same problem, even if you can get it to work again for a short while.

BTW, a friend of mine used regular bicycle brake cable on his and it seems to work well. I believe you can get this at Wal-mart or K-mart for real cheap and cut it to length.
