Yeah - what exactly is "binding"? If the thing isn't assembled properly what happens is that the joint will not flex, period. You can bolt it up to one of the flanges and the shaft can not be moved up, down or sideways, not nearly enough to bolt up to the opposite flange. (Don't ask how I know this...) As Rick says, new joints are always so tight as to be difficult to move by hand - this is normal. Sounds like maybe you've got one that's been replaced in the not-so-distant past. (Should be relatively easy to see with all joints cleaned and laid out side by side for comparison of wear points) Celebrate!
