I'm considering converting my original (160K miles) 1.9L wasserboxer to either a Subaru Legacy engine or a Golf/Jetta engine. I've seen kits on the internet to do either. Any suggestions on which is the better way to go? I'll be doing my own work and am comfortable with engine/transmission R&R. As I see it, the biggest issue (for me) is getting a good used wiring harness & engine control electronics. Also, does anyone have any experience with used Japanese engines from Rising Sun in California ? (this would be for the Subaru conversion). Also, while I'm at it, what is the feasibility of converting the existing 4-speed transaxle to a 5-speed to take advantage of the increased HP & torque at highway cruising speeds (I'd like to be turning a thousand RPM lower at 65-70 mph).
