Doug, I believe that, in respect to electronic sensors, with the Digitool, and a Bently, ones work of keeping their Vanagon "operational" has been reduced to the point where almost anyone can do it. I have owned my Vanagon for going on 5 years now, and with the exception of the CV joints, and the water pump, which were no minor problems to diagnose, and fairly easy to repair, the main problems I have had with it has been the sensors. The sensors going bad has been the nightmare of my experience with the Vanagon. From hesitation, to waiting for it to warm up before driving it, to, erratic idle, to a couple of other crazy problems, which all could have been easily diagnosed, and repaired had I had a Digitool. And it will but you in closer harmony with your stead. You'll notice the patterns, and then noticing anything different will be "obvious." So, based upon that, I suggest you get one.
