Sounds like a through-out bearing, since it is only in use when the clutch is depressed. You need to pull the transmission to get to it so you can check the clutch when you are down there.

I have a new to me 90 2.1 Westy in great shape except for a new noise when the clutch is depressed. I'm hearing a sort of whirring noise and plan to flush the entire brake/clutch hydraulics and change the transaxel fluid with Redline MT-90. Anyone ever have any experience with a sound like this? When this happened on my 82 diesel at the same mileage I ended up replacing the clutch.
