That would work great if I needed to reach things in the front or rear. Where I really need to reach is above the sliding door area. The cartop carrier is mounted on a rack attached to the poptop, and the latches are on the side above the slider door.

Karl, the Vanagon comes with a built in "ladder". Assuming that you have a metal bumper, attach a nonskid adhesive strip to the top of the bumper. Step up onto the bumper strip and you are there. Larry PS. Rolls of this nonskid stuff are available at "Camping World".
