This is common with high mileage engines, or any engine with worn oil control rings. The Gunk treatment cleaned out the gunk that was helping the worn oil rings to seal. The oil in a flat four like ours drains down overnight and gets on the cylinder walls. Worn oil control rings don't sweep it off well, so it burns off, leaving a blue haze. The more gas you give it the more you burn, hence more smoke. Fortunately, they work better as they warm up and expand.

BTW, smoke on acceleration indicates worn rings, smoke on deceleration indicates worn valve guides.

Not much to be done, you can try some "no smoke" oil additives if you want. Time to start saving for a rebuild, I have the same problem!
