My '81 Westy came with factory air, which I have since removed because it was broken. It used the air ducts in the dash and the ones above the sliding door. It did NOT affect the cabinets in any way. It did mean I had no glove box, since that area was used for the air conditioning. After I removed it, I got a glovebox and installed it.

Damn! As usual, there is no one, definitive answer. These vehicles are so confusing!

OK, to be more specific, does anyone know of a 1987 westfalia with factory air mounted anywhere other than the standard location, in place of the overhead cabinet?
