I had this happen on my eurovan. you need a security code for your stereo.
Your owners manual should have a supplemental manual for your sound system
and in there is a little card with a four digit code. to enter the code you
hold the SCAN & MODE buttons in for 3+ seconds and your LED will come up
with 0000, using your station preset buttons you enter the code number for
each position for the number in the first position you use station preset
button no. 1, etc.. Once the correct code is entered you hold down the SCAN
& MODE button again to enter the code. If you enter the incorrect code it
allows you to try again, if you enter the wrong code 3 times it will lock
you out for 1 hour, then let you try another 3 times.
IF you don't have the code you can get it at the dealer. When this happened
to me I didn't have the code. I took the stereo out of the dash to write
down the serial no. ( on the vanagon you might be able to read it by
removing the ashtray to read the sticker if it is on top). I first went to a
dealer, Intermountain Volkswagen in Salt Lake city, and they told me I would
have to bring the van into the service center and it was a 2 hour job to
take the stereo out compare the stereo serial no. to the van VIN number with
a database at Volkswagen of America. I explained to them that I had the
serial no. and my van was parked out front if they needed the VIN no. He
gave me some BS about they are required to bring it into the shop and bill
me two hour labor. I was ticked off to say the least. SO I went down the
street to Dave Strong Volkswagen and told the service dept my problem. I
spoke to the manager himself. He said it would be no problem. He took my
serial no. looked in a book and wrote down the code on his business card. I
offered to pay and it said it was his pleasure and good luck and apologized
for any inconvience my VW stereo had caused me. I was stunned. Needless to
say, whenever I need a dealer only part I won't even consider Intermountain
VW.
Thanks for letting me rant
