Brandt,

I don't know if it is possible for the power steering to leak inside the van as I am not sure of how the hoses are routed from the engine compartment to the power steering rack. Two other probable sources of leak are the: 1) Brake Master Cylinder (BMC) that is located under the instrument cluster cover 2) Windshield water leak Both of these are not uncommon in Vanagons. If it is the BMC be very careful in that brake fluid is very harmful to both you and your vehicle. Brake fluid on your skin is an irritant and toxic if ingested (this can include absorption through skin). Brake fluid in your eye can cause permanent damage if not flushed immediately (even just rubbing your eye transferring a very small amount will sting -- I have personal experience in this -- trust me). So, wear eye protection and chemical gloves when inspecting this area. Brake fluid will also brake down most plastics (this includes carpet) and discolor or remove paint. So, take a look at this soon to minimize damage. Others on the list have had to deal brake fluid leaks in this area and may have ways to clean this up. If it is the windshield leaking water, also take care of this soon as water leaking into the vehicle will corrode all those nice electrical connections that are coming into your fuse box that is up under your dash in this same area. This can play all sorts of havoc later with the instrument cluster and lights.

Regards,

Vince

Just got back from Vancouver B.C. where my fun loving SuperSonics beat up on the Grizzlies, and noticed my steering is leaking right down INSIDE the van by the pedals. Am I in for it or is there something that I can do? My Bentley should be arriving soon. It's been back ordered at BusDepot for over a week.

Thanks, Brandt '85 Westy
